As a kind of jewelry, pearls are usually evaluated and selected by the following three facets:
1 Luster: the luster of pearl is key to determine the quality of pearls.
A Strong luster: the surface of pearls is crystalloid, lucid and can reflect objects.
B Medium luster: the surface of pearls is clear, translucent and can reflect part of objects.
C LOW Luster: the surface of pearls is slightly translucent and weak lucid.
2 Figure
A Rounded pearl: called as sphere pearl or rolling pearl.
B Elliptical pearl: as rice-figured pearl. or rice pearl.
C Abnormal pearl: called as malformed pearl, including fastener pearl, lute pearl and so on.
3 Size
Pearls can be measured by diameter or weight measurement. According to ancient Chinese saying,
pearls with diameter above eight mm are defined as jewelry. The bigger the size of pearls is, the
more valuable.
